I went for a run this morning along Lake Mendota out to Picnic Point. Many of the leaves on the trees are starting to change colors: reds, oranges, yellows. The sky was mostly clear. The songbirds were happily chirping to each other. Everybody I passed had a smile on their face. But there was a slight chill in the air. An October chill. Today is the last day of September. I am going to miss you, September. You are one of my favorite months. September is a bittersweet time of year. But I think it is more sweet than bitter. September is always so pretty. The weather is nice almost every day. The apples on my apple tree become ripe and tasty. It is my Birthday month. The football season begins. There is definitely a lot to be excited about. It is bitter though, because September spells the end of summertime and a long, cold winter is on the horizon. Yes, I really am going to miss you September.
Michael Franks - If I Could Make September Stay:
Summer retreats now
Green Kingdom’s end
Why can’t I make
Time suspend?
The hummingbird would hover by me
And never fly away
If only I could
Make September stay
In every blossom
She hides a song
Sunshine me mine
All year long
The hummingbird would hum beside me
Her journey south delay
If only I could
Make September stay
If I could just confuse the moon then I
Could make September stay
Or imitate the Warbler’s tune then I
Could make September stay
